Five Basic Principles
Routine Names

BURST - an acronym that represents the Five Basic Principles:

B: Beautuful Hands   美人手
- No bends or kinks in wrists
- No tension in arms, wrists or fingers

U: Upright Body   立身中正
- Spine is always kept upright and no leaning
- Coccyx tucks in slightly to straighten lower back
- Chin turns slightly downward to keep neck straight
- Top of head is pulled up as if lifted with a string
- Lower body is pulled down to the ground with gravity

R: Relax   全身放鬆
Let go of any tension in the body, a pivotal principle in Tai Chi

S: Substantial Vs Insubstantial  虛實分明
- Separate (distinguish) weight between 2 legs
- One leg is 'Substantial' and the other is 'Insubstantial'
- (Except for in the Preparation Form)

T: Turn the Waist   轉腰轉胯
- Never move the body independently of the hips/waist
- All movements controlled by the waist/hips
